A NOTE FROM THE ARTIST

Rachel Eisen Bressler is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Printmaking. She works from a studio in her home in northern New Jersey where she lives with her husband David, and their cocker spaniel, Roxy.

I made my first huppah for my own wedding in 2001 as a gift to my groom. In the months before our wedding I'd tried to find something from our parents' weddings to incorporate into our own, but to no avail. I immediately ruled out wearing my mother's wedding dress. Her circa 1968 champagne lace mini dress (mid thigh, I swear) a la Laurie Partridge with ruffled collar and cuffs was not an option. As a mother of two sons and no daughters, my mother-in-law-to-be had long ago given her gown to the neighborhood girls to use to play dress up. In the end, I had a kiddush cup used at my husband's briss and another I had been given as a bat mitzvah, but that was it.

I made our huppah with the thought that although one day a daughter of ours might think my wedding dress was ugly too; she (or her brother) still might like to marry beneath the same canopy which covered her mother and father on their wedding day. I'll tell you the truth though—I had my dress preserved along with the huppah... just in case!

Every new huppah I make teaches me more and opens up new possibilities and ideas. I would be so honored to have the opportunity to make one just for you. I hope you will fill out the inquiry form so we can begin a discussion together.

Wishing you all the best,
